Why You Should Focus on Enjoying God

The question what are we created for has stuck with man-kind since the beginning of time. Our obvious meaning for existence is to glorify God. The Westminster Shorter Catechism states it best: “What is the chief end of man?” And, in response, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” They understood that glorifying God and enjoying Him were one in the same. What if enjoying God was the greatest way to glorify Him?

Why You Should Focus On Enjoying God

In my own experience, I had previously viewed enjoying God as an added bonus to the true duty of a believer: rigorous obedience to Christian duties (eg. praying, evangelizing, serving), even if those duties are emotionless, loveless. But what does Jesus say? “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word” (Jn. 14:23). Love (delight) and obedience are directly related. Delight is not just a spin-off of obedience to God, but it is part of it.  The strongest type of obedience is affection-based obedience.

Free Resource: Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ by John Piper

Check out this free .PDF version of John Piper’s book Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ. I would highly recommend this devotional-styled book as a tool for meditating on the character and worth of Christ.

    Excerpt:
“What makes Christ glorious, as Jonathan Edwards observed over 250 years ago, is “an admirable conjunction of diverse excellencies.” For example, we admire Christ for his transcendence, but even more because the transcendence of his greatness is mixed with submission to God. We marvel at him because his uncompromising justice is tempered with mercy. His majesty is sweetened by meekness. In his equality with God he has a deep reverence for God. Though he is worthy of all good, he was patient to suffer evil. His sovereign dominion over the world was clothed with a spirit of obedience and submission. He baffled the proud scribes with his wisdom, but was simple enough to be loved by children.”“

"What was the most loving thing Jesus could do for us? What was the endpoint, the highest good, of the Gospel? Redemption? Forgiveness? Justification? Reconciliation? Sanctification? Adoption? Are not all of these great wonders simply means to something greater? Something final? Something that Jesus asked his Father to give us? “Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me” (John 17:24)"

    Site of the Month: desiringGod.org

Site of the Month is a collection of featured sites that I think are worth visiting often.

    desiringGod.org - visit site

If you don’t already know, John Piper is an amazing writer on Christian living, theology, loving God, characteristics of God, and the list goes on and on… This site comprises many of his teachings and books. It’s an insanely good resource for those wanting to learn more about who God is, how to love God & man, etc.

Here is an excerpt from my favorite book of his, The Pleasures of God, Meditations on God’s Delight in Being God:

“There is a beautiful phrase in 1 Timothy 1:11 buried beneath the too-familiar surface of Bible buzzwords. Before we dig it up, it sounds like this: “The gospel of the glory of the blessed God.” But after you dig it up, it sounds like this: “The good news of the glory of the happy God.”

A great part of God’s glory is his happiness. It was inconceivable to the apostle Paul that God could be denied infinite joy and still be all- glorious. To be infinitely glorious was to be infinitely happy. He used the phrase, “the glory of the happy God,” because it is a glorious thing for God to be as happy as he is. God’s glory consists much in the fact that he is happy beyond our wildest imagination.”

Do you Abominate the Prosperity Gospel? via desiringgod.org

John Piper has really strong words about what he calls a “false Gospel.” He lays out his top three reasons for calling the prosperity Gospel a “false Gospel”, all of them deeply rooted in the Word (these verses aren’t open to interpretation!)
